One of the multiple benefits of ductless HVAC systems is quieter operation. However, a faulty ductless mini-split may produce strange noises that can be alarming. Let’s cover some ductless noises you might hear in your in Raleigh, NC, and what they mean.

Rattling

As your ductless mini-split ages, its components become worn out. These worn-out parts may loosen and hit the cover panel, causing a rattling noise.

Also, the outdoor unit’s cover panel may cause a rattling sound when the screws holding it in place loosen. A rattling noise can also occur when the fan blades collide with debris, such as sticks and leaves, that may have entered the outdoor component.

Banging

When larger system components loosen, they may collide with other parts, causing a banging noise. If left unaddressed, the loose components can significantly damage other parts.

Clicking

Your ductless mini-split is a high-powered system that needs lots of energy to regulate indoor temperatures. However, your home’s wiring may not supply sufficient power for the system to start working.

To address this issue, the system has a component called a capacitor that stores electrical energy to help kickstart the fan motors and keep them working. When this vital component malfunctions, you may hear a consistent clicking noise from your ductless system. Always leave capacitor repairs to a professional service technician since DIY attempts can result in bodily harm or additional damage.

Whistling

To help move heat from your house to the outdoors or vice versa, your ductless system uses a fluid called refrigerant. When the refrigerant lines become damaged, they can leak this vital fluid. A whistling noise occurs as the fluid leaks, whereas a gurgling sound occurs as air bubbles mix with the refrigerant inside the refrigerant lines.

A whistling noise can also suggest your air filter is too dirty. A dirty filter blocks air from smoothly entering your ductless system. The whistling noise occurs as your ductless mini-split draws air through minute openings left on the dirty filter.

Whenever you hear strange noises from your ductless system, it’s best to shut it down immediately to prevent further damage to its components. Call our ductless system repair experts at Quality Comfort Services, Inc. to have it inspected.
